Percentiles: Anti-Parris Petitioners

As with the pro-Parris faction, the relationship between gender and identification among anti-Parris petitioners can be displayed in a variety of ways by selecting the "Options" button in the pivot table "Layout" window. For example, percentiles of various anti-Parris petitioners can be determined. Double-click the "Count of Identification" icon in the Data window; click the "Options" button, and choose "% column" instead of "normal data" in the "Show data as:" window. The "Percentile" chart shows that only 32.14% of the anti-Parris faction were women as compared to 67.86% who were men. Of those who were members of the Salem Village church ("[Church] Member"), 64.71% were women compared to only 35.29% men.

Since anti-Parris petitioners differentiated themselves in a more complicated way than their foes, meaningful comparisons often require editing data. For example, to compare men and women householders and church members, users should change the "Non-Member" label to "Householder" and the "Free-holder" label to "[Church] Member." The resulting pivot table consolidates all householders and all church members in the "Identification" column.

Anti-Parris Petitioners with Edited Identity Column

The resulting table more clearly shows that male householders significantly predominated over women householders, underlining the special importance of non-church members and men to the anti-Parris's cause.

Similarly, using the edited "Identification" column, a pivot table can be constructed reversing the arrangement of category icons in the "Layout" window. Choose the "Identification" icon for Row, the "Sex" icon for Column, and "Count of Sex" for the data field.
